Modifying reading behavior of elementary special needs children: A cooperative resource-parent program.

Public Law 94-142 (1975) provides an opportunity for parents to actively participate in the development of their child’s individual educational program within the least restrictive educational environment. The right of a parent to participate in a child’s educational planning is a responsibility that has been neglected often. Recent research (Alexander & Clements 1975, Flint & Deloach 1975, Kroth 1975, Tharp & Wetzel 1969) indicates that parental interest or disinterest is likely to have an effect on a child’s attitude and learning pattern. Basic values, perceptions, and attitudes about oneself and others are primarily developed in the home. Classroom teaching is more meaningful and relevant if parents are involved and interested in their child’s education (Kirk, Bentzen, Ratzeburg & Tannhauser 1961, Kvaraceus & Hayes 1969). Thus it seems critical to foster parent involvement in the school.
